North African and Arabian music is granted a modern, dance-inspiring twist by Brussels-born and Washington, D.C.-based singer Natacha Atlas. A former isaac Merrit Singer for techno-pop band Transglobal Underground, and an episodic quisling of Jah Wobble, Atlas has continued to explore the fusion of her musical roots with Western electronic dance medicine. While Option cartridge bearer explained, "[Atlas] has a beautiful part, which sounds oddly like a blending between traditional Middle Eastern singers and Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins," The Wire wrote, "buoyed by her devotional vocation and the chatter of programmed beat generation, she swoops, glides and goes reach for the empyrean in a way that of necessity no translation". CMJ New Music praised her for having "explored the far reaches of the ethnotechno spectrum."


The daughter of an English mother and a Sephardic Jew father, Atlas grew up in a Moroccan suburbia of Brussels and was heavy influenced by the Arabic cultivation. In addition to acquisition to utter French, Spanish, and Arabic, Atlas was trained in the traditional techniques of raq sharki (abdomen saltation). 14th Sarajevo Film Festival opens with `Snow'

SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina �

The 14th Sarajevo Film Festival kicked off Friday with a screening of Aida Begic's debut feature "Snow," about life in a village in postwar Bosnia.


The movie was honored in May in a Cannes competition overseen by critics.


Over nine days, the Sarajevo festival - born in a sandbag-protected basement during the Bosnian war - will testify 174 movies from 40 countries. Last year the international event, which aims to backing and promote cinema and authors in Southeast Europe, attracted some 100,000 people.


This year's festival will welcome Kevin Spacey and Charlie Kaufman, as well as regional stars and filmmakers.


The festival started in 1994 in besieged Sarajevo when a few youth people tried to offer citizens some sense of normal life. Brandi Carlile writes new chapter for 'Story'

Singer/songwriter Brandi Carlile [ tickets ] continues to juggle her support appearances for Indigo Girls [ tickets ] with her own headlining dates throughout the summer months.The Washington State native, who opened some shows for Sheryl Crow last month, also made several appearances with the Indigos last year.Altogether the singer will hit 17 cities through August, with the bulk of the appearances headlining ones. "When I listen back and hear those things now, I'm glad we didn't take them out because they give this album a real human character."One of the songs on the record, "Cannonball," features Indigo Girls' Amy Ray and Emily Saliers. Carlile also made an appearance on the Girls' latest album, "Despite Our Differences.""The Story" follows Carlile's 2005 self-titled debut on Columbia Records, which garnered critical acclaim and landed on Rolling Stone's list of "10 Artists to Watch in 2005." The singer found an even wider audience when ABC-TV's hit drama "Grey's Anatomy" showcased three songs from the debut.The singer announced recently on her MySpace page that she will be heading into the recording studio next month to begin work on a new studio album.

Ryan Reynolds: 'Having Kids With Scarlett Is My Destiny'

Scarlett Johnasson’s engagement to Ryan Reynolds could be followed by another big announcement, because the actor is desperate for kids.

The couple made the big announcement on Monday a year after they hooked up, following 31-year-old Reynolds' split from singer Alanis Morissette.

And he hints he will be encouraging his 23-year-old fiancee down the aisle and into the maternity ward in a hurry.

Reynolds says, "I do want a child at some point.

"I feel like I need to fulfil the genetic paradigm, the destiny of it all."
